CENTRAL DEKALB DOMINATES IN THE CLASSROOM!!!
MAYFL launched is first MAYFL Scholarship Award in 2009. MAYFL chose 4 high school seniors that were former members of a MAYFL park to receive $1000 college scholarships. The applicants had to submit their grades and write an essay on what participation in youth sports meant to them. Central Dekalb, once again set the standard in MAYFL as 3 of the 4 award winners were former Jaguars. These essays and grades were reviewed and awarded by an independent committee not affiliated with MAYFL, which goes to show how our kids excel in the classroom and on the field. Central Dekalb Youth Football will add an additional $500 to each kid's scholarship as an effort to show all of our kids and our parents that education is key and essential to us.
Shannon Jolly is a senior at Stephenson High School and a member of their football team. Shannon played on several championship teams while at Central Dekalb and will continue his football career on the college level. Shannon had the overall highest score of all applicants for the MAYFL Scholarship. In his essay Shannon stated, "it isn't just a program to build children into fine football players and cheerleaders, it is a family". He echoes what we stress at Central Dekalb, that we are family and are helping to make all of our kids successful in life. We are helping raise our kids into responsible citizens as Shannon states without Central Dekalb, "I would not be as successful as I am today."
Michel'le Hull is a senior at Decatur High School and a member of their cheer team and softball team. Michel'le was on championship cheer teams coach by Shawn Thomas. She will be headed to college to play softball. In her essay, she stated that her involvement with Central Dekalb "bettered me as a person. I learned the true definition of teamwork and realized my natural leadership ability."
Breanna Thomas is a senior at Stephenson High School and a member of the dance team. Breanna was a member of the same championship squads coached by her mother, Shawn Thomas. She has continued to be a leader in the community as she left Central Dekalb for Stephenson. In regards to what role Central Dekalb played in her life, she stated "all of my success in and out of school is due to(Central Dekalb)".
Again, Central Dekalb congratulates members of our family as they became the first winners of the MAYFL scholarship award. They simply re-enforce that we are "simply the best"
